Though aging in cooler temperatures is pivotal for Maker's Mark 46, developing the Maker's Mark 46 finishing process was all about finding the right wood and determining how to treat it. Other than wood type, several factors can affect oak's impact on a bourbon, like how it's dried, cooked and even cut. After much experimentation, adding seared French oak (or Stave Profile No. 46) to fully matured Maker's Mark was just what Bill, Jr., was looking for. Maker's Mark 46 starts out as Maker's Mark Cask Strength. The barrels are fitted with 10 seared, French oak staves, and the bourbon is aged for nine more weeks. Any longer and the bourbon would take on too much wood flavor.
Style Bourbon Whisky
This one changed the way we think of bourbon, all because one man changed the way he thought about making it. Bill Samuels, Sr., simply wanted a whisky he would enjoy drinking. Never bitter or sharp, Maker's Mark® is made with soft red winter wheat, instead of the usual rye, for a one-of-a-kind, full-flavored bourbon that's easy to drink. To ensure consistency, we rotate every barrel by hand and age our bourbon to taste, not time. Each and every bottle of Maker's® is still hand-dipped in our signature red wax at our distillery in Loretto, Ky., just like Bill, Sr., would have wanted.
Bottler Maker's Mark
Maker's Mark 46 is the first new bourbon we've produced since opening our doors and the first offering from our wood-finishing series. We experimented tirelessly with the effects of wood-finishing to craft entirely new expressions of Maker's Mark that are true to the original. This required much trial and error – but expertise, passion and persistence paid off in the end. We enjoyed the Maker's Mark 46 wood-finishing experience so much, we decided to expand the concept with Maker's Mark® Private Selection. Our carefully sourced red winter wheat contributes to Maker's® characteristic sweetness.

KENTUCKY LIMESTONE WATER The iron-free water from our limestone-filtered spring-fed lake is rich in calcium and magnesium. This helps the yeast flourish.
Chill Filtered No
These barrels are stored in a specially built limestone cellar where it's an always-cool 50 degrees. This imparts flavor while keeping the wood from expanding and releasing bitter tannins as it does in warmer temperatures.

The first bourbon in our wood-finishing series, Maker’s Mark 46 was created by Bill Samuels, Jr., to amplify the flavors he loves in Maker’s Mark®. The innovative wood-stave-finishing process starts with fully matured Maker’s Mark® at cask strength. We then insert 10 seared virgin French oak staves into the barrel and finish it for nine weeks in our limestone cellar. The result is Maker’s Mark 46: bolder and more complex, but without the bitterness typical of longer-aged whiskies.
